What Are Bed Bugs?

“Night night sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” is a popular rhyme which will be said in children’s bedrooms around the country tonight. Unfortunately, although it’s likely that our parents said this to us in jest when we were younger, nowadays the phrase carries a very real warning, as bed bug North London infestations are becoming a real issue for homeowners and hotels throughout the UK and abroad. But what exactly are bed bugs?

Here at B-Discreet Pest Control, we appreciate that not everyone will be aware of what bed bugs are or what they look like; despite there being an influx of bed bug cases around the world, including here in London. For this reason, we’ve provided a brief guide on what bed bugs are, and also to dispel some myths about the little pests.

Cimex lectularius to give them their Latin name are part of the Cimicidae family, which also includes bat bugs and bird bugs. The common trait of this family of pests is that they feed off the blood of warm-blood mammals, including sleeping humans.
Although the brown, wingless adult bed bug is only a quarter of an inch long (a nymph or ‘baby bedbug’ is no bigger than a poppy seed), they can be seen by the naked eye, but because of their size they are very elusive.

A popular belief is that bed bugs are only found in unclean areas, but there is no proof to support this and the truth is that bed bugs can be found anywhere which offers a warm home for them. They’re also known to travel in clothing/suitcases of holidaymakers.

Tell tale signs that you have a bed bug North London infestation are small blood splatters on your bedding and little red, itchy bite marks on your body. When any of these signs become apparent, it’s important that you hire the services of a pest buster, such as us here at B-Discreet Pest Control, to cure the problem.
